Just Bought Your First Car? 3 Signs That Your Transmission Might Need Servicing

Owning your first car is a big responsibility, especially when it comes to the maintenance. In addition to the normal issues such as oil changes and tire rotations, there are other maintenance concerns that you need to be aware of. One of those concerns should be your transmission. If your transmission fails while you're driving, it can leave you stranded on the side of the road. Here are three signs that your transmission is in need of service.

Strange Noises When Shifting Gears

If your transmission is running smoothly, you shouldn't hear any strange noises when you switch gears. However, if your transmission fluid is contaminated with dirt, or your fluid level is low, you may start to hear grinding noises when you switch gears. If you start hearing strange noises when you switch gears, pull over and check your transmission fluid. Be sure to leave the car running so you can get a good look at the fluid. If your fluid level is fine, you might need to have your transmission flushed. This is particularly true if your transmission fluid is brown instead of the normal red.

Car Slips Out of Gear

In order for your car to switch gears properly, the transmission needs to build up pressure between each change. When the transmission is dirty, it can't build up enough pressure to switch gears effectively. If your car is slipping out of gear, you should have your transmission serviced. This is particularly true if the fluid levels aren't low.

Surging Forward

When your transmission is operating properly, the only time your car should speed up is when you have your foot on the gas. However, when your transmission fluid is contaminated, it can build up in the hoses. Once enough pressure has built up, it will be forced through the hoses, creating a surge of power through your engine. It's important to note that contaminated fluid can also cause the opposite effect. The fluid can build up and cause your engine to lag, which means you'll experience an occasional loss of power. If you experience either surging or lagging, you should have your transmission flushed. 

Now that you own your first car, be sure you give it the maintenance it needs. If your transmission experiences any of the symptoms described above, be sure to have it inspected at a transmission center near you.
