Replacing Your Tow Truck Light Bar? What To Consider

If it's time to replace your existing light bar on your tow truck, don't just pick the first option you see. It's important to choose wisely to ensure that the light is able to accommodate your own needs as well as the needs of your vehicle. Before making your selection, here are just some of the factors to investigate.

Vibration Resistance

Investigate whether or not the light bar has built-in vibration resistance. Tow trucks are often forced to maneuver along all different types of terrain. In areas where the ground is rugged, this can cause the light bar to vibrate. Light bars with vibration resistance are designed to withstand this extra movement without the lights detaching or even the entire light bar falling out of place. Always choose a model with this built-in feature.

Housing Material

What type of material is the bar housed in? The reason this is so important is that some materials don't do as well when exposed to the elements as others. Ideally, you want to select a light bar housed in aluminum. Aluminum isn't at risk of damage from sun exposure and it is also resistant to rust and corrosion. In terms of long-term use, this type of hosing material will allow you to get more use out of the light bar.

Amp Draw

Amp draw is the amount of electricity necessary to power a device. You want to choose a light bar with a minimal draw. When your vehicle is in operation, if the amount of amp draw for all the components of the truck is greater than what your alternator can handle, you will have issues with your battery that may actually leave you in need of assistance. In order to determine what level of amp draw is necessary for your vehicle, you need to verify your alternator output capabilities and consider all the other electrical devices in the truck.

Light Style

The overall purpose of a light bar is to alert other motorists of your presence on the road. Choosing the light style of the light bar carefully will help ensure you are more in-line with this goal. It's best to look for light bars that are designed to accommodate LED lights. Compared to traditional filament lights, LED light have far greater illumination qualities, making them more visible. As an added bonus, they also have a longer lifespan and generally have a reduced amp draw.

Make sure you are taking your time to select a light bar that is best suited to meet your needs.
